On 27 April 2026, a Cessna 208 Caravan operated by CityLink Aviation crashed south-west of Juba, South Sudan, killing all 14 occupants.[1]
The Sudan Civil Aviation Authority reported that the cause may have been bad weather with poor visibility.[2]
Background
[edit]Aircraft
[edit]The aircraft was a Cessna 208B Grand Caravan operated by CityLink Aviation Ltd. with the registration 5Y-NOK.[3]
Passengers and crew
[edit]A pilot and 13 passengers were on board the flight. The flight manifest said 12 of the occupants were South Sudanese while two others were Kenyans.[1]
Accident
[edit]The plane took off from Yei Airport at 09:15 CAT on a passenger flight to Juba International Airport. Contact with air traffic control was lost about 30 minutes into the flight.[1] The wreckage was found in a remote, hilly site 20 kilometres (12 mi) south-west of Juba.[4][5] Video from the crash site showed the wreckage on fire.[2] All the occupants were charred beyond recognition.[6]
Investigation
[edit]The South Sudan Civil Aviation Authority launched an investigation into the crash and deployed investigators to the accident site to determine the cause. Aviation officials stated that investigators are focusing on adverse weather conditions as a possible primary factor in the accident. The operator, CityLink Aviation, is cooperating with authorities during the investigation. The SSCAA indicated that a preliminary report would be released following the initial phase of the investigation. [7]
Weather
[edit]Weather information at the time of the accident was limited, but preliminary reports from the South Sudan Civil Aviation Authority indicated that adverse weather conditions were present in the area of Juba at the time of the crash. Investigators noted that poor visibility was likely a significant factor affecting the flight. [8] Contemporary media reports also suggested that the aircraft encountered deteriorating weather conditions en route, including reduced visibility consistent with low cloud or precipitation in the region, which may have complicated navigation as the aircraft approached its destination.
